5 Wrong Ways to Start the New Year at Your Martial Arts School

By Kovar Systems

As we enter the New Year we are flooded with initiatives and goals we want to do moving forward. A lot of our goals are big and feel impossible to accomplish, but the truth is that not all initiatives have to be big and grand.

Sometimes the small things add up to a bigger accomplishment. In fact, it is when we ignore the small things that our school suffers over the course of the entire year.

In an effort to manage your New Year plan, here are 5 WRONG ways to start the year off.

  1. Don’t talk to your team and keep your plans a secret. NO! Keep your team in the loop and make sure to plan ahead for weekly team meetings where you can share new ideas and work on already executed plans. When everyone is on the same page and working towards the same objective—it shows!

  2. Believe that all your best years of business are behind you. NO! Make sure you always look forward to what a new day will bring. Teach every class as if it was your first and last class. Your motivation and passion are key to the start of a successful New Year.

  3. Just wing it. NO! Review your time management skills and find ways to better tighten up your time. The better the school runs, the easier it will be to manage. Don’t forget, you can always find two minutes to do something productive.

  4. Keep your facility the exact same as it was. NO! Take time to look at your school with a fresh perspective. Keep a daily cleaning schedule, organize retail in a new way, give new paint where it’s worn, add a new display, etc. Always find ways to change and improve not just your classes, but your school too!

  5. “Save money” by using your gear until its last usable day. NO! Cycle out old gear for new regularly, long before any issues arise. Give your students the best and safest equipment to work with and teach them the responsibility of keeping it neat and clean. Sell used equipment to make room for new and give students opportunities to purchase the used gear to save them and you some money.
