As business owners, we spend a lot of time thinking about how we can improve ourselves and reach our goals within the industry. And almost all of us understand the value of setting goals.
Each year we set targets for our stats and projections to reach, and these help us to stay on track and ultimately achieve more than if we didn’t. But what about our students? Do they know the importance of goal setting and are we helping them to set their own goals of continual improvement to become their personal best? Simply being involved in martial arts is a great way for them to understand the value of long-term goals; I’ve yet to meet the person that’s ever regretted earning their black belt. With this in mind, it is in the best interest of our students that we encourage them to make resolutions and goals for the new year that will include the continuation of their martial arts training. This is good for us of course, but more importantly, it’s good for them. In that way, it is a win-win for all parties.
Here are some ways to make your school a bigger player in your students’ personal goals for the coming year…
-
Help them set their goals! Ask students as a group or individually what they would like to accomplish next year. Start now and continue to check in with them over the next few weeks. Let them know you are here to help keep them accountable and reach their goals.
-
Give them the tools to succeed. Since we know so many people set fitness resolutions each year, in January, begin messaging healthy lifestyle discussions as part of classes. Give weekly tips to guide them closer to their goals. Hand out pamphlets and recommend videos that address their training in ways that affect their entire day, not just when they are on your mat.
-
Celebrate their achievements. Be their encouragement and support center. Let them know how far they have come and what the future holds. Praise them both publically and one-on-one about how well they are doing towards their goals.
We all need a little extra coaching to make our New Year’s goals happen. By making yourself and your instructors the positive push your students need to achieve their goals, you will be an indispensable part of their ongoing success in life. They will look forward to each opportunity they get to train in your school and the idea of quitting something will never enter the equation. But this isn’t just about retention, it’s about cultivating a warm, inviting culture that feels personal to them and their day-to-day life.
