Business Tips Point to Ponder

3 More Actions to Take During the COVID-19 Crisis

By Dave Kovar

These are certainly challenging times and there are a lot of things out of our control. What we can control is how we respond to the circumstances around us, and how we respond can certainly influence outcomes. In order to keep the industry thriving, we wanted to help our fellow school owners by sharing some knowledge to help keep all boats afloat right now.

With this in mind, we want to offer several MORE important actions you can take and focus on to keep your martial arts business moving in the right direction in these difficult times. Stay tuned for more updates and action items we will be posting to help you and your team.

Now let's discuss some helpful action items...

  1. Over communicate with students. If you think that sending them an email once or twice a week with updates is enough, you are incorrect. Our schools are making an effort to reach out to every student with a phone call to give them an update and direct them to our online training. Response has been tremendous. Our goal is to continue this, weekly if possible.
  2. Set up online mini lessons using FaceTime or Zoom.* Sound unrealistic from a time perspective? Do the math. If you have 100 students, and gave each one 5 minute private lesson, that’s about 8.5 hours. Very doable because remember, you have all day to do these. Kids are out of school. Lots of adults are out of work. So you’re not limited to just the evening time slot. I know it seems like a lot of work so only do it with the students you want to keep training. (That was a joke, do it with everyone). This is massive and I can’t stress enough how important this is. *Note: Parents should be present for all lessons.
  3. Once you have your online portal figured out and working properly, target new members. Who says you can’t enroll new students during this crisis. Lots of people are looking for things to do. Your program could be it.

Note: These things will certainly be helpful for your martial arts business, but equally important: when you take massive action it affects you mentally and emotionally as well. All of a sudden you don’t feel is out of control. In other words, do you want to feel better? Get to work. Stay productive. It’s the best medicine out there. Don’t forget to remain calm and confident for your team and your community.

Thank You,

Dave Kovar
