Develop a Warrior Spirit within Your Students

By Kovar Systems

It is important as our martial arts students progress, that we teach more than simply the next collection of kicks and punches for their next belt. We have a duty as martial artists to train them to be strong in both mind as well as body and work to maintain their focus and strength throughout each week....

Here are a few things we look for when developing that “Warrior Spirit” in our students:

GRIT. This is the perseverance, the will & toughness to push forward in spite of adversity. Encourage strength of character within your students, an indomitable spirit, and courage. Don’t forget that means mental toughness and perseverance too, not just physical strength.

BLACK BELT ATTITUDE. The definition of this can take many different forms, but often we are saying the same thing: a Black Belt Attitude is polite, courteous, and respectful. Teach proper “Yes Sirs”/”Yes Ma'ams,” along with focused eye contact and attention. Be on time. Be humble. The list often goes on. In order to be a good martial artist, instructors should expect (and demonstrate through their own actions) this type of attitude on a daily basis.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN TRAINING. As a beginning white belt, much of the responsibility for improvement rests on the instructor's shoulders. However, as the students advance, responsibility should shift more and more to the them. They must be accountable to push, to continue to learn, and to be increasingly better martial artists. They should take ownership of their journey, and not simply depend on the instructor to direct them. You can reinforce this by introducing practice habits, goal setting and self-analysis as part of your class plans.

When you focus on these three areas on and off the mat, you will help to develop their mindset to reflect the warrior spirit you wish to see inside them.
