Student Retention Staff Development Business Tips Point to Ponder

6 Steps to prepare for the next year.

By Dave Kovar

The first of the year is a great time to take a step back and review how well your school is doing. This is also a great opportunity to revise your goals and priorities. The first six steps to improvement that listed below are a part of a larger document in our Kovar’s Resources Library including 16 TIPS total...

We also have a LIVE call with Dave Kovar next week, December 15th, going into detail on the full: A Year in Review, PLUS 16 Tips for 2016. Make sure to register below and attend the call.

If you start focusing now, your school will do better in just about every way imaginable: Your staff will perform better, your students will train longer, and your financial picture will improve significantly.

  1. Take a fresh look at your facility. Have a friend outside of your school tour your facility. Ask them to point something out that could be improved, you can be sure that your prospects and students are seeing it too. Start to address points you could improve.
  2. Get rid of junk you no longer use. When we are in places that are very familiar to us, we tend to overlook things, and it's very common to hold onto things that we no longer use. A good rule of thumb is, if you haven't touched it in a year, throw it out, donate it or recycle it. Clearing the junk not only makes improves the appearance of your school, but you'll feel more relaxed working in a less cluttered environment.
  3. Update your gear. Your gear eventually will wear out and can even become unsafe. Inspect all your gear used in your school. Replace beyond-repair items with a new piece of equipment. Remember your school may even be judged as old or outdated, simply because some gear is tattered or torn.
  4. Do a performance reviews for your staff. Meet individually with staff to evaluate their progress. Ask them to complete a short self-assessment on how well they feel they have done in their role at your school. Be sure that this form asks for their next year goals. Review with them and discuss how you can work together to help them achieve their goals. Discuss opportunities for advancements and end on a positive note, make sure they walk away feeling encouraged!
  5. Work harder and more consistently. This one needs very little explanation. There is simply no substitute for working harder, smarter and more consistently than ever before. And if you do this, you'll be pleased with the outcome.
  6. Start every day by remembering how fortunate you are to be in the martial arts business. You have the opportunity to make a positive and long lasting impact on others. As Martial Arts professionals, we have a rare chance to change lives for the better every day. Having an appreciation of this daily will help you have a positive outlook.

Good luck on the new year and I look forward to seeing everyone on the LIVE Call on December 15, 2015 at 10AM (PST).
